When customers ask ChatGPT, Copilot, or Perplexity who to call, be the answer.
Nearly a billion people a week ask ChatGPT for recommendations. Copilot is open on the desks of Windows and Microsoft 365 users everywhere. Perplexity answers more than a billion cited searches a month. Each one names a short list of businesses, and each decides differently. We make sure your business is on that list.
After Google AI Overviews, Meta & Gemini, these three assistants are the next most important places your business must appear.
Fewer clicks. Better customers. An open field.
of U.S. consumers now use an LLM at the product discovery stage
Similarweb 2026 Brand Visibility Index[4]of website visits come from AI assistants today, but that share grew more than 500% in the past year
Conductor 2026[11]of brands have zero mentions in LLM answers. The shortlist is still open.
Search Engine Journal, Q1 2026[10]The search box is becoming a conversation.
For twenty years, being found meant ranking on a page of links. Today, a growing share of customers skip that page. They describe their problem to an AI assistant, and the assistant returns two or three names. There is no page two. If you are not named, you were never considered.[4]
The businesses named are not chosen at random. Each assistant verifies a business across the web before it will recommend it. That verification is a discipline, and it is one most competitors have not started: nine in ten brands have no LLM mentions at all, and only three in ten that do appear stay visible consistently.[10]
That gap is the opportunity. The signals AI assistants trust take months to build and are hard to displace once earned. Businesses that establish them now inherit the recommendations while the field is still open.
Three assistants, three very different audiences.
Reach is only part of it. Each platform serves a different moment: consumer discovery, work and study, and cited research.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
The undisputed leader and the highest general-consumer adoption of any AI product. About 2.5 billion prompts a day, and roughly 87% of all visible AI referral traffic to websites.[11] When a consumer asks an AI who to hire, this is usually where they ask.
- Consumer discovery: "who should I call for…"
- Blends trained knowledge with live Bing-powered browsing
- Names 2–3 businesses per answer, with reasons
Microsoft Copilot
Widely used in workplaces and schools because it ships inside Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365. Users do not choose it so much as find it already open. Its answers are grounded in Bing search results, which most businesses have never optimized for.
- Work and study context: B2B and professional services
- Grounded in Bing's index and Bing Places
- Peak usage during business hours
Perplexity AI
The leading conversational search engine for cited research. Every answer shows its sources, so users treat it as a research tool for considered purchases. Perplexity retrieves live pages for each query and rewards fresh, well-structured content with specific data.
- High-intent research: comparisons, "best", "vs"
- Real-time retrieval with visible citations
- Favors primary sources, forums, and trusted publishers
Small traffic. Outsized revenue.
AI assistants send a small share of visits and a large share of customers, because the visitor's research is finished before they click.
Referral clicks understate the effect. Many AI recommendations end in a phone call, a map search, or a branded Google search rather than a click from the chat. That is why we measure the recommendation itself, not just the traffic behind it.
AI assistants do not guess. They cross-check.
Before an assistant names a business, it looks for agreement across independent sources. Where the sources agree, it recommends with confidence. Where they conflict, it names someone else.
1. Sources it reads
- Google Business Profile & Bing Places
- Directories and data aggregators
- Reviews on Google, Yelp, industry sites
- Your website and its structured data
- News, publishers, forums, social
2. What it checks
- Do name, address, phone, hours match?
- Is the business real, open, and active?
- Does it clearly offer this service here?
- Do others vouch for it (reviews, mentions)?
- Is there a page that answers the question?
3. What it says
- Names 2–3 businesses
- Explains why each was chosen
- Cites the sources it trusted
- Everyone else is invisible
- Same process, every time someone asks
One foundation. A different playbook for each assistant.
Every assistant needs verifiable business data, but each retrieves and weighs it differently. We build the shared foundation once, then tune for how ChatGPT, Copilot, and Perplexity each find and choose sources.
| Assistant | Where it gets its answers | What wins the recommendation | Foundgentic services that deliver it |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Trained knowledge of well-known entities plus live browsing powered by Bing; product and business data from listings, reviews, and third-party mentions. | Being a clearly defined, consistently described entity: identical business details everywhere, recent reviews, mentions on sites the model already trusts, and plain-language pages that state exactly what you do and where. | |
| Microsoft Copilot | Grounded in Bing search results and Microsoft's own graph: Bing Places, LinkedIn, and indexed pages with structured data. | Bing-first technical SEO: verified Bing Places listing, Bing Webmaster Tools indexing and IndexNow, complete schema, fast pages, and an active LinkedIn company presence for professional queries. | |
| Perplexity | Real-time retrieval of live web pages for every query, with citations shown; weights freshness, structure, primary data, trusted publishers, and forums. | Pages built to be quoted: descriptive headings, direct answers, specific numbers and original data, recently updated, on a crawlable site, plus placements on the publishers and communities Perplexity already cites for your category. |
01Entity foundation
One verified record of your business distributed everywhere the assistants look: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and the aggregators and directories behind Local Citations. This is the prerequisite for all three platforms.
02Machine-readable site
LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and Review schema so the assistants can quote your details instead of inferring them, on a fast site that Bing and Perplexity can crawl completely.
03Quotable content
Authority Content that answers the exact questions customers ask the assistants, written to be extracted: direct answers, specific data, clear structure, and kept fresh for Perplexity's live retrieval.
04Corroboration
Reviews, editorial mentions and links on the publishers each model already trusts, and brand mentions across social and community platforms, so every assistant finds others vouching for you.
Already visible in one assistant but not the others?
That is the most common audit finding. Our free audit tests ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews separately and shows where the gaps are.
We track the recommendation, not just the click.
Analytics tools see a fraction of AI influence; a large share of AI-driven visits arrive as direct traffic or a branded search. So we monitor a fixed set of the real prompts your customers use, in each assistant, every month, and record whether you are named, how you are described, and which sources were cited.
Those results sit beside the outcomes you already track: calls, direction requests, form fills, and bookings. You see the recommendation rate move first, then the business follow. This is the reporting layer of our AI Search Visibility program.
- Recommendation rate per assistant, per prompt set, tracked monthly
- Sentiment and accuracy of how each assistant describes you
- Sources each assistant cited, so we know what to strengthen
- Competitors named in your place, and why
- AI-referred traffic, calls, and bookings alongside visibility
Getting recommended by AI assistants, answered.
ChatGPT names businesses it can verify and describe confidently. It draws on its training data plus live web results (via Bing) and cross-checks the Google Business Profile, Bing Places, directories, reviews, and mentions on authoritative sites. Consistent business data, clear content that answers customer questions, and third-party mentions are what move it. Our AI Search Visibility program builds and tracks these for your category and market.
Partly. All three read many of the same trust signals Google uses: business listings, reviews, structured data, and authoritative links. But ChatGPT and Copilot retrieve from Bing's index rather than Google's, and Perplexity runs its own real-time retrieval that favors fresh, well-structured, primary-source pages. A site invisible in Bing or slow to crawl can rank on Google and still be absent from AI answers. We optimize for each engine's retrieval layer, including schema and Bing indexation, not just Google.
Copilot is built into Windows, Edge, and Microsoft 365, so it is the assistant many people have open at work and school without choosing it. Its answers are grounded in Bing search, which means Bing Places for Business, Bing Webmaster Tools indexation, schema markup, and a strong LinkedIn presence carry more weight than on other assistants. Our AI Search Visibility work includes the Bing layer specifically because of Copilot.
Perplexity retrieves live web pages for every query and shows its sources, so it favors pages that are fresh, clearly structured with descriptive headings, and contain primary data, specific numbers, and direct answers. It also weights authoritative publishers, forums, and review platforms. Authority Content written to be quoted, placements on the publishers Perplexity already cites, and a fast, crawlable website are the levers.
Still a small share of total visits, typically one to two percent, but the visitors are far more valuable. Multiple 2026 studies put AI-referred conversion at roughly four to five times organic search, and some measure much higher, because the visitor's research is finished inside the chat before they click. The bigger effect is often invisible: a recommendation that produces a phone call or a branded search rather than a referral click. We track AI mentions directly through AI Search Visibility monitoring rather than relying on referral traffic alone.
Data corrections to listings, citations, and schema are typically read by the assistants within four to eight weeks; Perplexity reflects fresh content fastest because it retrieves live. Building enough authority and mentions to be named consistently for competitive queries takes three to six months. See how it works for the full timeline.
Paid placements exist in ChatGPT, but they are separate from the organic answer and do not influence whether ChatGPT recommends you. Ads produce immediate reach; organic visibility compounds and persists. Many clients run ChatGPT & LLM Ads alongside organic AI visibility work so the two reinforce each other.
Ask each assistant the questions your customers ask ("best [service] in [city]", "who should I hire for…"), in a private or incognito session so prior interactions do not bias the answer, across several phrasings. Note who is named, in what order, and which sources are cited. Our free AI visibility audit runs this systematically across assistants and shows which competitors appear in your place.
