Own the map in your market, on Google and on Apple.
Nearly half of all Google searches are looking for something nearby, and three in four of those people visit a business within a day. The three businesses in the Google map pack take the calls. On iPhones, Siri, CarPlay, and Safari answer from Apple Maps instead, and most businesses have never claimed their listing there. We put you in the top three on both maps, across your whole service area, not just your block.
Maps are also what AI reads first for local questions. See Google AI Overviews & Gemini and ChatGPT, Copilot, & Perplexity.
The map is where local customers decide.
of local clicks go to the three map pack listings, vs 14% to the first organic result
2026 local click studies[3]Three seats. Two maps. One customer who is ready to buy.
A local search is not research. It is the last step before a phone call or a visit: 76% of people who search "near me" on a phone show up within 24 hours.[2] The map pack sits above everything else on that search and shows three businesses. It appears on 93% of local searches and takes about 44% of clicks; the fourth-ranked business gets almost nothing.[3][4]
On an iPhone the same customer often never touches Google. Siri, CarPlay, Spotlight, Safari suggestions, and the Maps app itself all answer from Apple Maps, the default on more than 1.5 billion active iPhones and more than half of U.S. smartphones.[7][8] Most businesses have never claimed that listing, which means the top spots are still available.[9]
Both maps now feed the AI assistants too. Google AI Mode cites Maps and Business Profile records in about eight of ten local answers.[13] Win the map and you are the default answer everywhere it is asked.
You do not have one map ranking. You have hundreds.
Proximity shapes more than half of map pack decisions,[5] so your position changes street by street. A geo-grid scan runs your key search from dozens of points across your service area and shows exactly where you win and where you disappear. This is how we measure every engagement, before and after.
Illustrative geo-grid based on a typical single-location service business; the pin marks the business address. Your free audit includes a real scan of your own service area on Google Maps and Apple Maps.
Google Maps and Apple Maps do not play by the same rules.
They share your name, address, and phone number and almost nothing else. Optimizing one does not optimize the other.
Google Maps & the map pack
The largest local audience on earth, on Android by default and in every Google search. Ranked by relevance, distance, and prominence, with the Google Business Profile carrying about a third of the weight and reviews about a fifth.[5]
- Managed through Google Business Profile
- Google's own reviews, Q&A, posts, and photos
- Rich data: search terms, calls, directions, competitor context
- Feeds Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini
Apple Maps
The map behind Siri, CarPlay, Spotlight, Safari, Messages, and Mail on every Apple device, plus DuckDuckGo. Apple unified its listing tools into Apple Business in April 2026 and is launching Apple Maps Ads, a sign of how much weight it now puts on local.[7]
- Managed through Apple Business (formerly Business Connect)
- Ratings and reviews pulled from Yelp and partners, not Apple
- Minimal analytics: no search terms, no competitor data[10]
- 58% unclaimed, 16% actively managed[9]
Relevance, distance, prominence.
Google filters every local business through three questions: does the profile match the search, how close is it to the searcher, and how well known and trusted is it. Distance you cannot change. Relevance and prominence you can, and they are where a closer competitor gets beaten.
The 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey puts the Google Business Profile at about a third of pack weight, with the primary category the single most powerful field, and reviews at about a fifth, where a steady flow of recent reviews now outranks a large but stale total.[5] Google's March 2026 core update pushed further in that direction: completeness, review recency, and owner response rate gained weight.[6]
One record of your business. Two playbooks.
The shared foundation is a single verified record of your business distributed everywhere both maps look. From there, Google and Apple each get the work their system rewards.
| Lever | Google Maps & map pack | Apple Maps | Foundgentic services |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listing | Verify, choose the primary and secondary categories that match your money searches, complete every service, attribute, and hour, remove duplicates, and keep it active weekly. | Claim and verify in Apple Business, match categories to Apple's taxonomy, add Showcases, action buttons (Call, Book, Order), photos, and hours; consolidate duplicate place cards. | |
| Data consistency | Name, address, phone, hours, and categories identical across the profile, website, and the aggregators Google reads. | Apple pulls from partners (Yelp, TripAdvisor, Foursquare, data aggregators). Conflicts there override what you enter. We fix the sources, not just the card. | |
| Reviews | Steady velocity of Google reviews with keywords customers naturally use, every review answered, policy-violating reviews flagged. | Yelp and partner ratings are what Apple displays and weighs, so review generation is split across platforms by design. | |
| Prominence & content | Service and service-area pages with LocalBusiness schema, local links and mentions, posts and photos that keep the profile active. | Website and schema linked from the place card; brand mentions and directory presence that Apple's partners index. | |
| Measurement | Geo-grid rank scans for each priority search, profile actions (calls, directions, clicks), and map pack share by neighborhood. | Independent geo-grid scans of Apple Maps, since Apple provides no ranking or search-term data, plus Apple Business impressions and actions. | Included in every engagementHow it works |
01Audit and grid scan
We scan your priority searches across your service area on both maps, audit both listings against every ranking factor, and map the neighborhoods you are losing and why.
02Fix the record
Categories, services, hours, photos, duplicates, and every source Apple and Google read are corrected once and kept in sync. Aggregator propagation takes 38 to 45 days.
03Build prominence
Review velocity on Google and Yelp, service-area pages with schema, and local mentions that push your coverage outward from your address.
04Expand and report
Monthly re-scans show the green spreading across the grid on both maps, next to calls, direction requests, and bookings from each profile. Multi-location? See Enterprise & Multi-Location.
Ranking on your own block but nowhere else?
That is what most first scans show. Our free audit runs a geo-grid of your top search on Google Maps and Apple Maps and shows exactly where the coverage ends.
We report coverage, actions, and customers, not a single rank.
A ranking checked from your office tells you almost nothing, because your customers are not standing in your office. We track map pack position on a grid across the service area for each priority search, on Google and on Apple separately, every month.
Beside it sit the numbers that pay: profile views, calls, direction requests, website clicks, and bookings from each map, so you can see coverage expand and business follow. This is the maps layer of our AI Search Visibility program.
- Geo-grid coverage and average rank per search, Google and Apple
- Top-3 share by neighborhood, month over month
- Calls, direction requests, and clicks from each profile
- Review velocity and rating on Google and Yelp
- Competitors holding the seats you are targeting next
Google Maps and Apple Maps visibility, answered.
The map pack (also called the local pack or 3-pack) is the block of three businesses with a map that Google shows above the regular results for searches with local intent. It appears on roughly 93% of local searches and takes about 44% of clicks, against about 14% for the first organic result, and businesses in it receive 126% more traffic and 93% more calls, clicks, and direction requests than positions four to ten. Getting into and staying in it is the core of our Google Business Profile service, supported by Local Citations and Reviews & Reputation.
Three factors: relevance (does your profile match what was searched), distance (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). In practice the Google Business Profile carries about a third of the ranking weight, with the primary category the single most influential field; reviews carry about a fifth, with recency and response rate now outweighing raw count; and proximity shapes more than half of pack decisions. That is why map rankings change block by block, and why we measure them on a geo-grid rather than from one location. See Google Business Profile.
Because Apple Maps is the default on every iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and CarPlay unit, and iPhones are more than half of U.S. smartphones.[8] When an iPhone user asks Siri for "a dentist near me", taps an address in Messages or Mail, or searches in Spotlight or Safari, the result comes from Apple Maps, not Google. Apple Maps data also feeds DuckDuckGo and other services. Yet 58% of businesses[9] have never claimed their Apple listing and only about 16% manage it, so the field is open. We manage Apple Business listings as part of Local Citations and profile management.
Apple does not run its own review system; its place cards pull ratings and reviews from Yelp, TripAdvisor, and other partners, and its ranking leans on listing completeness, category accuracy, data consistency across those partner sources, and engagement. Apple also gives you far less data than Google (no search-term reports, no competitor benchmarks), so coverage has to be measured with independent rank tracking. The work overlaps with Google on data consistency and differs on where reviews and photos need to live. Our Reviews & Reputation program covers Yelp specifically because of Apple Maps.
A geo-grid scan runs the same search from dozens of points across your service area and records your map pack position at each one, then colors the grid: green where you rank in the top three, yellow for four to ten, red where you are absent. It shows the truth a single search from your office hides: most businesses rank well within a mile and vanish beyond it. We scan Google and Apple Maps separately, use the grid to target the exact neighborhoods to win next, and report it monthly so you can see coverage expand. The free audit includes your first scan.
Yes. Google allows a verified but hidden address with defined service areas; ranking then depends more on prominence than proximity: review velocity, a complete profile with the right categories and services, consistent citations, and dedicated service-area pages for each city with LocalBusiness schema. Apple Maps supports service-area listings as well. We build this stack for contractors and home service companies routinely; see Home Services.
Category, profile, and listing corrections often move positions within two to four weeks, and aggregator data takes 38 to 45 days to propagate. Expanding coverage across a whole service area, which depends on reviews, citations, and content compounding, typically takes three to nine months depending on competition. The March 2026 core update tightened proximity in competitive categories, so gains now come from prominence work rather than shortcuts. See how it works.
Directly. For local questions, Google AI Mode cites Google Maps and Business Profile records in about eight of ten answers, and ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity cross-check the same profile, ratings, and listing data before naming a business. A complete, consistent, well-reviewed map presence is the foundation of AI visibility, which is why this work sits inside our AI Search Visibility program alongside Google AI Overviews & Gemini and ChatGPT, Copilot & Perplexity.
