AI & Search Visibility

Half of Google searches now start with an AI answer. Be the business it cites.

AI Overviews reach 2.5 billion people a month and appear on roughly half of U.S. searches. AI Mode passed a billion users. The Gemini app is at 950 million. All three are built on the same Gemini models, and all three decide, in a few sentences, which businesses a customer hears about. When yours is cited, you win the click and the call. When it is not, the customer never sees you.

Google's AI surfaces are the largest AI audience on earth. ChatGPT, Copilot, & Perplexity come next.

Why now

Ranking got you the click. Now the answer gets the click.

For most of Google's history, page one was the prize. Today, the prize sits above page one: an AI-written answer that names a handful of sources and, for local questions, a handful of businesses. Pew Research watched real users and found that when an AI Overview is present only 8% click a traditional result, against 15% without one, and a quarter simply end their search.[4]

The clicks did not move to a competitor. They disappeared from the web, except for the businesses cited in the answer, which earn more organic and paid clicks than everyone else on the page.[8] Visibility has split into two games: ranking, and being quoted. Most businesses are still playing only the first.

The businesses that become Google's trusted source for their category now will be hard to displace later, because trust compounds and citations reinforce rankings.

AIO

AI Overviews

~50%of U.S. searches show one; 88% in healthcare, 68% of local business searches[2][10]

The summary above the results. It quotes a few sources and, for local queries, names businesses directly, pulling from ranked pages, the Business Profile, review sites, directories, Reddit, and YouTube. Where it appears, clicks to uncited sites fall by more than half.[6]

  • Shown to everyone who searches, no opt-in
  • About 54% of citations come from top-10 pages[9]
  • Favors pages that answer the question directly
AIM

AI Mode

1B+monthly users within its first year; 93% of sessions end with no click[1][7]

A conversational search tab that replaces the results page. It splits a question into several sub-searches ("query fan-out") and composes an answer with follow-ups. For local questions it cites Google Maps and Business Profile records in about eight of ten answers, not the business website.[11]

  • Organic rankings have no reach here unless cited
  • Your Business Profile is effectively your homepage
  • Rewards covering every sub-question of a topic
GEM

Gemini app

950Mmonthly active users, up from 400M a year earlier; ~27% of AI chatbot traffic[1][14]

Google's standalone assistant, on Android by default and grounded in Google Search, Maps, and the knowledge graph. When someone asks it for a recommendation, it leans on the same entity data Google holds about you, plus Maps ratings and what the web says.

  • Consumer assistant, growing fastest of the three
  • Reads your entity: profile, Maps, knowledge graph
  • Weights reviews and third-party corroboration
Why it pays

Being cited is the new page one.

The clicks that remain go disproportionately to businesses named in the answer. Cited brands earn 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than uncited ones on the same results page.[8] For local businesses the effect is sharper still, because the Overview often names two or three providers and stops.

And the customer who arrives from an AI answer has already been told you are a good choice. That is a warmer lead than any blue link ever produced.

How Google's AI decides

Google's AI does not guess. It cross-checks.

Before a business is cited, Google's models look for agreement between what you say about yourself and what the rest of the web says. Where the record is complete and consistent, you are quotable. Where it is not, someone else is.

1. What it reads

  • Google Business Profile and Maps
  • Pages already ranking for the query
  • Reviews on Google and industry sites
  • Directories and data aggregators
  • Reddit, YouTube, news, and forums

2. What it checks

  • Is there a page that answers this directly?
  • Do name, address, phone, and services match?
  • Is the business real, open, and reviewed?
  • Can the page be parsed (schema, structure)?
  • Do independent sources corroborate it?

3. What it shows

  • A short answer with a few cited sources
  • For local queries, two or three named businesses
  • Links to Maps profiles in AI Mode
  • Everyone else below the fold
  • Same process on every search
54%

of AI Overview citations come from pages ranking in the organic top ten. Ranking still matters; it is just no longer sufficient.[9]

Our approach

One foundation. A different playbook for each surface.

All three surfaces read the same record of your business, so the foundation is shared. What each one weights, and where it looks first, is different, and we tune for that.

SurfaceWhere it gets its answerWhat wins the citationFoundgentic services that deliver it
AI OverviewsPages Google already ranks and trusts for the query, plus the Business Profile, review sites, directories, Reddit, and YouTube.Pages that answer the question directly (pricing, "how to choose", process, FAQs) with clear structure and schema, on a site that already ranks; consistent business data; first-hand mentions off your site.
AI ModeMultiple sub-searches per question; for local intent, primarily Google Maps and Business Profile records.A complete, active Business Profile (categories, services, hours, photos, Q&A, fresh reviews) and content that covers every sub-question a customer would ask, so each fan-out search finds you.
Gemini appGoogle Search grounding, Maps, and the knowledge graph; weights entity consistency and corroboration.A clean entity: identical business details everywhere Google looks, Organization and LocalBusiness schema, strong Maps ratings, YouTube and third-party presence that confirms who you are.

01Profile as homepage

For local questions, Google's AI reads your Business Profile before your website. We complete and maintain it like a landing page, and keep directory and aggregator listings identical so every cross-check agrees.

02Quotable pages

Three quarters of AI Overviews' local answers cite pages that answer the question directly.[11] Authority Content builds those pages: realistic price ranges, how to choose, what to expect, structured for extraction.

03Machine-readable site

LocalBusiness, Service, FAQ, and Review schema so Gemini can parse your facts, on a fast, crawlable site that keeps ranking, because half of citations still come from the top ten.

04Corroboration

Google's AI favors first-hand experience: reviews, video, community discussion, and mentions on trusted sites. We build the off-site footprint that confirms what your site claims.

Free AI visibility audit

Ranking on page one but missing from the AI Overview?

That is the most common finding in our audits. Our free audit checks AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini separately for the searches your customers run, and shows exactly who is cited in your place.

How we measure it

We track the citation, not just the ranking.

Google Search Console folds AI Overview and AI Mode clicks into ordinary search data, so it cannot tell you whether you were cited. We monitor a fixed set of the real questions your customers ask, from your service area, across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini every month, and record whether you are named, how you are described, and which sources Google trusted.

Those results sit beside your rankings, map pack positions, and the calls and bookings you already track. This is the Google layer of our AI Search Visibility program.

  • Citation rate per surface, per query set, tracked monthly
  • How Google's AI describes you, and whether it is accurate
  • Which sources it cited, so we know what to strengthen
  • Competitors named in your place, and why
  • Rankings and map pack position on the same keywords
Questions

Getting cited by Google's AI, answered.

AI Overviews are assembled from pages Google already trusts for the query plus third-party sources such as directories, review sites, Reddit, and YouTube. Roughly half of cited pages rank in the organic top ten, so classic ranking still matters, and the other half are pulled for directly answering the question. The levers are content that answers the exact question (pricing, "how to choose", process), schema markup so Google can parse it, a complete Google Business Profile, and consistent listings and mentions off your site. Our AI Search Visibility program builds and tracks these for your queries.

AI Overviews are the AI summary shown above normal Google results on roughly half of searches. AI Mode is a separate conversational search tab that replaces the results page with an AI answer and follow-ups; it breaks a question into sub-searches and, for local queries, cites Google Maps and Business Profiles most of the time. Gemini is Google's standalone assistant app, grounded in Google Search, Maps, and the knowledge graph. All three run on Gemini models and read the same underlying data, so one verified business record and machine-readable site serve all of them, with tuning for each surface.

Yes, for queries where they appear. Pew Research measured users clicking a traditional result 8% of the time with an AI Overview present versus 15% without, and about one in four users ends the session after reading the summary.[4] The exception is businesses that are cited inside the Overview: they earn more organic and paid clicks than uncited competitors. The strategy shifts from ranking alone to being cited, which is what Authority Content and Schema Markup are built for.

It is the single most important input for local questions. A 2026 analysis of tens of thousands of citations found that for local-intent queries AI Mode links to Google Maps and Business Profile records in about eight of ten answers rather than to the business website, and AI Overviews draw on the same profile data. Categories, services, hours, photos, Q&A, and reviews are what Google's AI is reading. Our Google Business Profile service manages this monthly.

Google's AI favors first-hand experience, and Reddit and YouTube are the largest sources of it; together they account for roughly two in five AI Overview citations. For a business it means the conversation about you off your website matters: video that shows your work, community and forum presence, and mentions on review and industry sites. Social Media & Brand Mentions and Backlinks & Digital PR build that footprint.

Yes. About 54% of AI Overview citations come from pages in the organic top ten,[9] and Google's AI treats ranking as a trust signal. But ranking alone is no longer enough: pages that rank well and are not cited lose most of their clicks. The work is to rank and to be quotable. Our AI Search Visibility program tracks both for the same keywords.

Profile and listing corrections and schema are typically reflected within four to eight weeks. New or rewritten pages can be cited as soon as they are indexed and trusted, often within one to three months for less competitive questions. Consistent citation for competitive commercial queries builds over three to six months as authority and mentions accumulate. See how it works.

Search the questions your customers ask, in an incognito window from your service area, and check the AI Overview, the AI Mode tab, and the Gemini app separately; note which businesses and sources are cited. Search Console reports AI Overview clicks inside normal search data, so it will not tell you whether you were cited. Our free AI visibility audit runs this across all three surfaces and shows who is cited in your place.
